My favorite album by Wilco is by far A Ghost is Born.
I put it in more than one personal top 10 albums of the 2000s.
It was also the first album I have ever listened by Wilco.
This to say that I couldn't be more pleased to find out that Hot Sun Cool Shroud, the new EP by Jeff Tweedy and company, reminds a lot of their 2004 album.
And of all the 6 songs of the mini-album, for a total of 17 minutes and 36 seconds, "Annihilation" is probably the closest to the sound of A Ghost is Born.
It's probably the post-punk guitars, popping up here and there in the album.
It could be the summertime-after-dark feeling reminiscing of Tweedy's rehab and panic attacks.
It might be because of the lyrics picturing a moment that we know won't last:
Life It's nothing but shadows I looked for you, far and wide Let's kiss before Just before Goodbye.
It might well be because of the instrumental "Livid" and "Inside the Bell Bones", recalling some of the original instrumental hooks.
Or maybe it's just that it's been 20 years since the band from Chicago released the album.
Recommended for all those who loved A Ghost, and those who never heard of Wilco and want to give them a chance.
